Sights They Saw: (Re)visiting Pictorialised Lands: Art Agenda, S'pore

Overview

In Sights They Saw: (Re)Visiting Pictorialised Lands, every artwork embodies an attempt to depict a place, either distant or past, once visited by each artist. With works by nine modern artists— inspired by travels in the region— critically juxtaposed against three large-scale contemporary pieces that explore the complexities of visually representing real geographical locations, the exhibition foregrounds the multiplicity of techniques artists across time have utilised in pictorialising places.

Visitors are invited to ruminate on how the act of pictorialisation through the subjective lens of experience, individual subject positions, and artistic styles can reflect, influence or even shape our perceptions of these places as they exist in reality. More than windows into bygone or faraway lands, the exhibited artworks reveal each artist's particular worldview as much as they tell us about the places themselves.

Sights They Saw opens in conjunction with Mini Art Walkabout @ Tanjong Pagar Distripark, which will run from 17th October to 24th October 2023. During the event, visitors can collect exclusive stickers from all participating galleries.

On the closing day of the exhibition, 25 November 2023, 3-4pm, join artists Debbie Ding and Johann Fauzi alongside NTU art history PhD candidate Anne Goh and exhibition curator Jessie Lim for a panel discussion, I Spy With Mind's Eye: Representations And Re-Imaginings of Places by Modern & Contemporary Artists, on how Singapore artists think about, imagine and visualise places. Jessie Lim will give a pre-discussion tour of the exhibition.
